Support COSM

A Letter from the Dean

Dear Alumni and Friends of the College of Science and Mathematics,

The need for highly skilled and uniquely qualified graduates in science and mathematics across Georgia and the nation has never been greater. To meet regional and national needs and with a sharp focus on preparing the future generations of scientists and mathematicians, the College of Science and Mathematics (CoSM) prepares all students to be both job-ready and professional/graduate program ready. CoSM faculty are committed to the use of best practices in science and mathematics education. Our graduates have significant, repeated exposure to the high-impact practices in science and mathematics that develop technical and essential skills (a strong foundation in core arts and sciences, undergraduate research, collaboration, teamwork, leadership, scientific writing and communication, global perspectives, diversity, service-learning, and capstone experiences that include ePortfolios and projects). Our faculty are also committed to improving the math and science literacy of all Georgia Southern students through our general education program.

Our instructional and research facilities and equipment must be continually upgraded to ensure that our graduates are well-prepared and competitive. We must also invest in our faculty to assure that they can grow professionally, and pass their knowledge and experience to our students. An appropriation from the State supports our programs, yet annual, capital, and planned gifts are always needed to keep our infrastructure modernized and current. Also, at Georgia Southern, we realize that many students have the talent and the drive to pursue an education in science and mathematics that will change their lives and the lives of their family members. We are keenly aware that many students struggle to afford their education, so we are committed to improving access to our programs. With this in mind, our college, through our appropriations, our grants, and our donations, supports many students through paid undergraduate research, paid travel to national meetings and networking conferences, and many academic and need-based scholarships for tuition, textbooks, and supplies.

With sincere thanks to the generous contributions and endowments from Alumni and Friends of the College, we continue to produce proficient and dynamic graduates. Consolidation with Armstrong State University has given our college a footprint across the entire southeast region of Georgia and has positioned us to be a regional and national leader in the education and engagement of our students. With your support, we will continue to improve our ability to provide a comprehensive educational and research experience for our students, which is critical to support the growing science and technology-driven economy of our region and nation.

We have identified our priorities through 2026 through our Strategic Plan. Specifically, our priorities include Faculty Development, Research, and Infrastructure Enhancements, Undergraduate Research, and Graduate Student Financial Support. Your contribution will help us deliver outstanding educational experiences to our students and meet the challenges that face us all in the 21st century.

Thank you for your consideration and support of the College of Science and Mathematics at Georgia Southern University.

Delana A. Gajdosik-Nivens, Dean
