MAJ James Thornton

MAJ James Thornton joined the Eagle Battalion in Summer 2021 and serves as one of our MS II Instructors.

MAJ Thornton was born and raised in East Bernard, TX.  He has a Bachelors in Political Science from Texas A&M University and a Masters in Military Operational Art and Science from the Air Command and Staff College.  His military education includes the Artillery Officer Basic Course, Artillery Captain’s Career Course, and the Air command and Staff College.

MAJ Thornton commissioned as an artillery officer through the Officer Candidate School on 6 January 2005 as a college option.  He has most recently served as the Operations Officer for the 3rd Battlefield Coordination Detachment – Korea at Osan Airbase, Korea.  His other prior assignments include serving as an artillery platoon leader, company executive officer, battalion assistant operations officer, battery and company commander, aid-de-camp, plans officer, brigade fire support officer, and battalion executive officer.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), the Meritorious Service medal (2 OLC), the Army Commendation medal (2 OLC), the Army Achievement medal, the Meritorious Unit Award (1 OLC), the National Defense Service Ribbon, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2 Stars) the Iraqi Campaign Medal (1 Star), the Global War on Terrorism Service ribbon, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon (2), the NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.

MAJ Thornton has deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan and has served forward deployed in both Germany and the Republic of Korea.  He and his wife, Lucy, have three children.
