This lesson focuses on nuclear energy as an alternative source to fossil fuels. Students will work in groups of four to create a device that will produce steam when placed on a hot plate. This steam needs to leave the structure in a stream that is concentrated enough to cause a fan to turn. After the students have succeeded in creating an effective steam turbine, students will apply these concepts to the use of turbines in nuclear energy.
1. Explain the difference between controlled and uncontrolled fission
2. Describe how turbines are used to create energy
