Department of Mathematical Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Georgia Southern University, the largest university in Southeast Georgia. The department conducts teaching, scholarship, and service in many areas of Mathematics, Statistics, and Mathematics Education. The core mission of the department of Mathematical Sciences is to engage students with an academically challenging, inclusive, and respectful environment that provides them with the quantitative knowledge, problem-solving collaborations, and support they need to be successful in subsequent mathematical careers and educational programs. This mission is supported by: (1) offering carefully designed and regularly updated relevant curricula, guided by standards held by professional societies in the mathematical sciences, along with a variety of extracurricular activities available to all mathematical sciences majors; (2) offering engaging and academically challenging service courses to non-majors; (3) hiring, supporting, and retaining a diverse group of well-qualified faculty and staff to support the department’s mission and strategic goals; (4) encouraging all faculty members to continue to grow in teaching, scholarship, and professional service; and (5) continually cultivating an inclusive, intellectually stimulating atmosphere in the Department that encourages the learning of the mathematical sciences.

The Math Department offers the B.S. in Mathematical Sciences undergraduate degree, and the M.S. degree with concentrations in Mathematics and Statistics.
