COSM Activities for Research Week

COSM Students will be participating in Research Week at Georgia Southern during the week of April 10th 2017. Events will be held April 11th, 13th and 14th whereby COSM undergrads, COUR scholars and graduate students will present their research.

• Tuesday, 11 April 2017: The College of Science and Mathematics invites you to join us for a panel discussion at 4:00 pm in the Biological Sciences Building, Room 1109. A panel of three distinguished faculty will discuss research, challenges, resiliency and lessons learned, in addition to advice on how to best prepare for graduate and professional school.

Panelists include Karelle Aiken, Ph.D. (Georgia Southern University), Lance McBrayer, Ph.D. (Georgia Southern University), and special guest Jarrad Van Stan, Ph.D. (Harvard Medical School, Institute of Health Professions). Dr. Van Stan is doing cutting edge speech rehabilitation research. His career path is of significance to students interested in pursing graduate and professional schools, medical fields, and biomedical engineering. Seating is limited so we ask that you register by April 4th.

• Thursday, 13 April 2017: Dr. Jarrad Van Stan of Harvard Medical School’s Institute of Health Professions (IHP) will be presenting a seminar on the long term benefits of an undergraduate research experience. All COSM faculty, students and COUR recipients are encouraged to attend. The title of this seminar is “Finding my voice: How majoring in vocal performance inspired my attempts to improve voice disorder testing and treatment.” Dr. Van Stan’s seminar will be held in the Nessmith-Lane Building, room #2911 at 2:00 pm.
• Thursday, 13 April 2017: The 13th Annual COUR and Undergraduate Research Symposium. This event will be held in the Nessmith-Lane Building Ballroom. Poster presentations will be on display from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. Between 3:00 pm and 4:45 pm, the poster session will take place with drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres. All undergraduate research students in COSM are invited to present their work. Any research project related to independent research, capstone, experiences, independent study courses, course-related research, or internship experiences is appropriate for this event. Registration is free, but each student must submit a Poster Session Registration Form by April 6, 2017. • Friday, 14 April 2017: The 2017 Research Symposium will be held from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center. The Research Symposium is a conference style showcase of student undergraduate and graduate research across multiple disciplines. All COSM graduate students are encouraged to present their thesis or non-thesis research during this event. This event includes speakers, poster and presentation sessions from all academic disciplines. Use the following links for more information, for registration and proposal submissions.
