Remembering Dr. Yingkang Hu
Dr. Yingkang Hu, a faculty member in his 27th year in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, passed away suddenly from a heart attack on Thursday, March 10, 2016. Dr. Hu came to Georgia Southern as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in 1989. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1995 and to Full Professor in 2000. Before coming to Georgia Southern, he was at the University of South Carolina, where he earned his PhD in Mathematics in 1989. He received a BS in Mathematics from Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 1982.
Dr. Hu was an accomplished mathematician and dedicated teacher. He presented talks at national and international conferences, many times as an invited speaker. He also published over 30 research articles. His outstanding work was recognized with the Georgia Southern University Award for Excellence in Research in 1994. He was popular with students while maintaining high standards for their performance in his classes.
Dr. Hu served the University, College and Department with distinction. He served on numerous committees at all levels. He was the Graduate Program Director for the department’s masters program from 1998-2002. He was truly dedicated to Georgia Southern.
Dr. Hu was a wonderful colleague and friend to many. His smile and friendly greeting will be missed by everyone who knew him.
A memorial service for the campus will be held on Tuesday, March 22nd at 3:00 in Russell Union Room 2041. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend and share memories of Dr. Yingkang Hu.
