I am fascinated by the processes that lead to the production of a complex organ like the human brain with billions of neurons assembled in a precisely conserved architecture. Early nervous system development involves massive migration of newborn neurons from the site of birth to their final position, where they assemble functional circuits. Any disturbances in this process could lead to a broad range of human neuronal deficits including lissencephaly, developmental epilepsies, intellectual disabilities, learning disorders and autism. A major focus of my research has been to gain a greater understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate neuronal migration.
