The Georgia Southern University Sea Turtle Program
The University sponsors the Sea Turtle Program, a conservation effort to study and protect coastal Georgia’s endangered sea turtles. The sea turtle program was highlighted in the Fall 2019 Edition of Georgia Southern Magazine. A copy of the article “Protecting the Nest” is available online for free.
The Applied Coastal Research Lab (ACRL)
The Applied Coastal Research Laboratory (ACRL) is a field laboratory located on Skidaway Island near Savannah, Georgia providing logistical support for field trips from inland areas, and access to large and small research vessels, geological and geophysical field sampling equipment and full GIS capabilities. Campus partners on Skidaway Island, including Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, Grays Reef National Marine Sanctuary and the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service, provide opportunities for a variety of collaborative interactions.
The Georgia Southern Museum
Geology and geography faculty and students work closely with the Georgia Southern Museum which is accredited by the American Association of Museums. Permanent exhibits include the 40-million-year-old whale Georgiacetus vogtlensis, an internationally recognized fossil discovered and excavated by Georgia Southern faculty and students in Burke County, Georgia. Bearing features of both terrestrial and aquatic animals, the specimen helps illustrate the transition from a terrestrial to a fully-aquatic environment evident in whale evolution.
The Mindo Cloudforest Foundation
The Mindo Cloudforest Foundation, founded in December 2001, is an Ecuadorian non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of bird habitat in the Ecuadorian Andes. MCF seeks to promote bird tourism as an alternative means of income in rural communities. MCF also works on reforestation as a means to fight climate change. As part of their mission, the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation is planting native species trees in the Northwestern Ecuadorian Andes with the support of various partners in the US and Europe, most notably the Belgian Government. Thus their CarbonNeg initiative is working to mitigate the effects of climate change through reforestation and conservation.
HOPE Foundation
HOPE Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Miami, Florida. The foundation has been engaged in providing quality maternal and child health in southern districts of Bangladesh since 1999. During the time HOPE Foundation established multiple hospitals, rural birth centers, midwifery training programs and organized many health programs to serve the vulnerable people in the area.
HOPE Foundation has extensive engagement in humanitarian assistance through its engagement in caring for the Rohingya refugees who fled Myanmar in 2017 to escape persecution and violence. The foundation established a maternity field hospital and multiple maternity clinics to serve the population.
Currently, essential maternal and child health services are delivered from 26 HOPE facilities. HOPE serves over 200,000 people annually.
Through partnership with Georgia Southern University, HOPE Foundation aims to conduct quality research work to assess how its services are impacting people it serves, how services could be tailored to meet the needs of the marginalized community. The collaborative work will help HOPE Foundation to produce innovative model of care which could be replicated across Bangladesh and overseas.
